April, 12-15 2010 Moscow (the International Trade Center) hosted the II International Congress-Fair "EurasiaBio- 2010" organized by the Ya. A. Ovtchinnikov Russian Biotechnology Society (RBS) supported by the State Duma of RF, Federal Agency ROSSOTRUDNITCHESTVO, the Russian Society of Sciences, the Russian Trade and Industry Chamber , the Union of biotechnological enterprises. Leading specialists in the field of biotechnology, representatives of science, business, administration bodies from Russia and 40 countries participated at the congress activity. The Congress was welcomed by the Russian Minister of Education and Science Andrey Fursenko and by the President of the Russian Trade and Industry Chamber Evgeny Primakov.
The Congress was opened by the Honorary Chairman of the Organizing Committee, the First Deputy of the RF State Duma Chairman Oleg Morozov. In his speech Morozov underlined the high scientific, industrial and social importance of the biotechnology as the XXI century priority and enlightened the role of the International Congress "EurasiaBio" as the industrial instrument of collaboration between scientists and practitioners in the European-Asian space.
The Congress was marked by the high level of foreign specialists representation, Stephen Barril - the leading world known investor in the biotechnology field, USA, Leroy Hood - one of biotechnology pioneers, Professor , USA, Balasubraman Natesh - the biotechnology adviser of the Indian Government among them. Outstanding administrative persons such as Maive Root - Director of the EU biotechnology Department, Nijama Enhbold - the vice speaker of Mongolia, Tair Mansurov - the General Secretary of EurasEC and others participated at the Congress work.
The first plenary session including program lectures of the Russian Government representative and foreign guests have pulsed the business tone to the entire event. Alexandr Khlunov, the Director of the Science, High Technologies and Education Department in the Russian Government presented the position of the State in the biotechnology sphere. He stressed that the Russian Government and profile ministries have paid a great attention to the development of the contemporary pharmaceutics by establishing the target strategy "Pharma-2020" . He pointed that it is absolutely necessary to develop a separate bioeconomy program for Russia , all the efforts in the direction will be supported by the Russian Government.
The government of Kraskojarsk kray has announced the open tender for establishing a nanotechnology center . The principal purposes of the contest is the creation of the Siberian Nanotechnology Center. The center will serve as an incubator for innovative companies, for the technological and engineering support of companies engaged in the field of nanotechnology. It will execute construction projects ordered by commercial firms, it will ensure access to equipment necessary to applied works. The Nanotechnology center will support the educational activity in organization of seminars and teaching courses. ROSNANO is going to invest up to 900 mln rubles in establish the Nanotechnology center. The money will be spent for purchasing the modern equipment.14.02.2010 11:17:33
Under the auspices of AO "KazAgroinnovation" a joint Kazakh-Australian lab of corn culture genetics has been created. Australia was the initiator of this joint venture. The lab will carry out research in corn culture genetics to breed drought resistant corn species. Kazakh specialists in biotechnology and molecular biology are working in Australian institutions for nearly two decades. 10 new scientists will be selected to be engaged in the new lab.
Belgorod region is the leader in the pork and poultry production . Subsequently it became the powerful generator of harmful wastes - poultry generates over 1 million dung , swines - nearly 1.8 million cubicmeter of liquid dung a year. As the result the environment is infected by methane, carbon dioxide, ammonia and hydrogen sulfide endangering the human health. The governor of the region has established a council responsible for biotechnology and bioenergetics development. It is envisaged to build devices which would process the agricultural wastes . The project is expected to be profitable, to create the market of the own organic fertilizers and to give new jobs.
The new lab opened in Kharkov is attached to the regional Center of standardization, metrology and certification. By establishing the lab some food enterprises contributed in the investment. The service of detecting GMO in the product is charged by approximately $100. Ukraine authorities issued a law permitting the GMO level in the product from 0.1 up to 0.9%. All products exceeding this accepted level have to bear a special mark.
Indian mass-media cite the opinion of Mr Vasilov President and CEO of the Russia Biotechnology Society expressed last week during his visit to India "The «Russian biotechnology is going to establish partner relation and to create joint ventures with Indian companies. Our Society joints over 4000 members , they are eager to collaborate with Indian biotechnological and pharmaceutical firms, to commercialize innovations , to establish joint ventures." Russia is especially interested in vaccines, agrobiotechnology, nanobiotechnologies, bioinformatics, as well as in clinical trials.
During his stay Mr. Vasilov paid a visit to Genoma Valley and was impressed by the progress of such renown companies as Bharat Biotech and Vimta Labs.Mr Vasilov told that a large Russian delegation will take part in the 7th International Forum BioAsia, which will be held February, 3-6 in Haidarabad the famous scientific and technological stronghold of India. "BioAsia" forum hosts major international players active in the filed of biotechnology, biopharmaceutucs, agrobiotechnology. Mr. Vasilov anticipates that the ppropriate decisions concerning Russia's investments will be taken in the frame of the Forum.
The Russian scientists E. Krylatych and S. Strokov have presented the 50 years forecast of the innovative development of the agricultural complex . The changes will include selection, genetics, environment. The research will be continued by practical application of genetically modified products . New varieties and hybrids resistible against harmful conditions diseases and pests will be introduced. The ray-wheat hybrid - triticale offers resistance against frost and plant diseases and yields 100 hundredweights/ha crop. Great perspectives have resources paring technologies minimizing losses during storage, transportation and processing of agricultural products. Investigators publish new data in the report 'Chemically assisted microbial production of succinic acid by the yeast Yarrowia lipolytica grown on ethanol.' According to a study from Russia, "A new two-step process of production of succinic acid (SA) has been developed, which includes the microbial synthesis of alpha-ketoglutaric acid by the yeast Yarrowia lipolytica (step 1) and subsequent oxidation of the acid by hydrogen peroxide to SA (step 2).
